About Us

The formation of Sutton Waldron WI has a long history and dates back to 1930. The name SWIM is derived from the joining together of the ladies from adjoining villages. James Ismay, the owner of Iwerne Minster at that time, would not let the villagers of Iwerne form their own institute, or so it is reported. As a result, the ladies of Iwerne would walk across the fields to join other " like minds" in Sutton Waldron. So it continues to this day, however transport varies! Our friendly WI is roughly 39 strong, with ladies from all walks of life, assorted interests and experiences. There are monthly meetings with interesting speakers or activities, a Summer Garden Party or Barbeque, Fundraising Suppers, a Christmas lunch and occasional outings and there is always a cup of hot tea and home made cake.
